Microsoft won't use PlayStation Home, will keep meetings boring

: Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Business
Despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise, Microsoft has told CVG that it will not be using PlayStation Home to facilitate cheaper, virtual meetings. The company insisted that it had access to everything -- including Live Meeting and Xbox Live's party system -- needed to "host a virtual meeting in-house" ... and not in Home. It's probably best not to indirectly endorse your competitor's efforts, but just think of how excruciatingly boring meetings will be without Sony's eccentric virtual haven:"And that's why, by altering our predicted life-to-date replacement ratio matrix, our profits will positively sway our exponential yield curve. Joan, do you understand?""Mark, I've got some curves for you right here. They're swaying.""And so ... spontaneously at that. Why do I have the sudden urge to start gyrating in rhythm to non-existent music?""Come on, do the robot with me!""Oh yeah, doin' the robot! Damn, Joan, how big are your measurements, 'cos they do not compute.""Ugh ... why do men become cretins in Home? Also, it's not Joan. It's Joe.""As in Joe-Ann or OH CRAP YOU'VE SUDDENLY BECOME A HIDEOUS AND UNDESIRABLE MAN!"Microsoft won't use PlayStation Home, will keep meetings boring originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 14:22:00 EST.
2008 Japanese game retail tallied, tumbled

: Nintendo DS, Sony PlayStation 2, Sony PlayStation 3, Sony PSP, Nintendo Wii, Microsoft Xbox 360, Business
Has it really come to this? Not even a DS hardware revision could salvage another woeful year for Japanese game retailers. Despite closing on a high note, 2008 marked a 15 percent decline in retail sales from the previous year. Hardware sales accounted for the biggest drop, managing a paltry ¥250.5 billion ($2.6b) in revenue -- down 23.5 percent from 2007. Software sales fared better, falling only 7.9 percent to a total of ¥332 billion ($3.5b). Internally, Japan is suffering through a recession, and, externally, global economic factors have crippled the country's export trade for some time. It's not just high-priced electronics that are turning off foreign consumers, though, in some cases it's the quality of goods. Exhibit A: Only one Japanese-designed game managed to crack our annual Top 10. (Hint: Not Wii Fit.)[Image credit: goodcatmum]2008 Japanese game retail tallied, tumbled originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 13:54:00 EST.

Unigamesity writes: "Let's not forget about the console wars! There are sale charts, there are fanboys slamming other fanboys' data, there are all sorts of ways to 'decide' the winner of the console wars One of them is, of course, checking the exclusive games and that's exactly what we're planning to do now. So, the battle is on: PS3 vs. Xbox 360 vs. Wii which console has the best exclusives?"

PETA chooses Fable 2 as its GOTY

: Microsoft Xbox 360, RPGs
When Joystiq chose Fable 2 as its Game of the Year, were you aware that we were displaying not only our great taste in electronic entertainment but also our abiding love for all the planet's creatures? No? Neither were we until we saw that the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals had chosen Molyneux's baby as this year's Most Animal-Friendly Video Game.We think the more obvious choice was Doritos Dash of Destruction, as (1) its protagonist is the king of animals (a dinosaur!) and (2) it serves as an invitation to meditate on the very real effects of extinction. Just think of it: You could be watching dinosaurs racing every day, if we hadn't hunted them out of existence for their delicious skins.PETA chooses Fable 2 as its GOTY originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 13:25:00 EST.
Killzone 2 demo confirmed for Europe

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed to VideoGamer.com today that a demo for PS3 exclusive Killzone 2 will arrive on the PlayStation Store in Europe, although the exact date is still to be determined. According to a spokesperson the demo will be released in the "normal manner", presumably removing the possibility of a similar pre-order scheme to that running in the US. US gamers will be given early access to a Killzone 2 demo by pre-ordering the exclusive PS3 FPS at retailer GameStop - download codes will begin being sent out on February 3. A demo for all those who didn't pre-order at GameStop will be released after the game is released through the PlayStation Store.

Eurogamer: Europe may get pre-launch Killzone 2 demo

: Sony PlayStation 3, First Person Shooters
Eurogamer claims a source close to Sony has indicated that if the Killzone 2 demo clears QA, it'll "almost certainly" be released in Europe before the game storms store shelves. This information comes hot on the heels of Sony America's confirmation that a North American demo will not be available until after the game launches on February 27.Now, here's where wordplay makes the situation sticky. Killzone 2 doesn't currently have a clear release date in Europe. So, depending on when Europe actually gets an official date, the demo and game could very well be out in North America before Europe enters the zone of killing.Eurogamer: Europe may get pre-launch Killzone 2 demo originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 12:56:00 EST.
Turbine RMT Manager Not for LOTRO, AC or DDO

Recently, the developers at Turbine posted a job opening for a RMT / E-Commerce manager. Although many of us assumed that this sort of position would be used in a future game and not in LOTRO, AC or DDO, a number of forum posters (and other news sites) cried DOOM! and unleashed the hounds of war. Thankfully, there has been an official comment on this situation:

Hey guys! We know the recent job listing has caused a bit of a stir, but please be aware that this posting is for an unannounced future project. We appreciate the thoughts and feedback on both sides thus far.

They do want your comments on the subject, and so do we. Make sure you head to our forums and voice your RMT thoughts.read more

Time extension: Midway gets extra month to pay off debts

: Business
Midway has picked up a time bonus, turning back the clock somewhat on its 50-day fast track to financial doom. The troubled Mortal Kombat publisher has negotiated some breathing room for itself, extending the deadline to pay back half of its crushing $150 million in debt by another month until February 19. Of course, this still leaves $75 million to fork over to investors in a couple weeks, though Midway notes that it is currently "in discussions" to push back the repayment of this debt as well. When things are going south as quickly as they have gone for Midway, you take your victories where you can, though unless Midway expects next month's Diesel-fueled Wheelman to drive to the front door with a bag of cash, we wouldn't stop looking under the rug for loose change just yet.[Via Variety]Time extension: Midway gets extra month to pay off debts originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 12:26:00 EST.
Subway Teams With Konami To Promote Healthy DDR Sales [Cross Promotions]

From now until the end of March, succumbing to that damnable "Five Dollar Foot-Long" jingle could net you some plastic DDR crap and a $10 coupon good towards your next living room-eating dance pad game. In the name of promoting healthy lifestyles in children, Subway has teamed with Konami in order to include DanceDanceRevolution toys in every Fresh Fit for Kids meal at participating locations through March. Sure to be a big hit at raves, the premium items include an Action Armband, Water Bottle, Disco Revolution, Pencil Pal, Dancemania and Break-it-Down. Other than the armband, which is pretty self-explanatory, and the water bottle to help rehydrate your children before they collapse to the ground and have to be hauled off by security, I have no idea what any of that stuff is. Included with whatever you wind up with will be a $10 off coupon good on the latest DDR games, currently stacked five high at your local game store. Haven't they done this before? I could have sworn I'd gone into a Subway back when I was concerned about my health and laughed at the silly DDR merchandise sometime in the past. Oh well. SUBWAY® RESTAURANTS, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH KONAMI DIGITAL ENTERTAINMENT, INC, WILL HAVE KIDS DANCING AT THEIR TABLES WITH DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION® PREMIUM Thru March 29, 2009, Subway Restaurants To Offer DanceDanceRevolution® Premiums With Each Purchase Of A Fresh Fit For Kids Meal WHAT: Kids can dance into the New Year at SUWBAY® restaurants with the all-new DanceDanceRevolution® promotion. Konami and SUBWAY® restaurants today announced a partnership that will help promote a healthy lifestyle for children by delivering the fun and excitement of Konami's best-selling get-up-and-move video game to children everywhere. From December 29, 2008 thru March 29, 2009, participating SUBWAY® restaurants will offer one of six exclusive, high quality DanceDanceRevolution® branded premium toy accessories along with a $10 coupon good on any of the newest DanceDanceRevolution games with each purchase of a SUBWAY FRESH FIT FOR KIDS meal. Available for a limited time while supplies last, the SUBWAY FRESH FIT FOR KIDS meal premiums include, DanceDanceRevolution® branded Action Armband, Water Bottle, Disco Revolution, Pencil Pal, Dancemania and Break-it-Down. The kids meal and each premium will come in four color DanceDanceRevolution® kid's meal bags that feature DanceDanceRevolution® images on one side and details about the SUBWAY FRESH FIT FOR KIDS meal program on the other. The SUBWAY® promotion is the latest in a series of initiatives that has made the DanceDanceRevolution® franchise a fitness phenomenon that has received a tremendous amount of recognition for helping people of all ages lose weight and achieve better health. DanceDanceRevolution® has truly pioneered the latest trend in gaming that takes players off of the couch and away from the joystick. Each version of the game has a Workout Mode that allows users to track calories burned and monitor their own fitness regiment. Additionally, DanceDanceRevolution® has been an official part of the physical fitness curriculum in multiple school districts throughout the United States including every school in the State of West Virginia. The game has also been a valuable tool used in numerous research studies on fighting childhood obesity and has been a mainstay in health clubs and libraries across the nation as organizations look for new and innovative ways to fight childhood obesity.

Xbox 360 sales reach 28M, Xbox Live garners 17M users

: Microsoft Xbox 360
Thanks to "over-achieving" in Europe and (we'd imagine) a few sales in North America over the holidays, the 360 has reached 28 million units sold worldwide. That's more than 8 million ahead of PS3 and around 12 million (estimated) behind Wii. Microsoft also claims there are around 17 million users on Xbox Live, with over $1 billion in sales occurring on the service. To give some perspective to these numbers: If you were to stack all the 360s on top of each other, then stack all the PS3s and Wiis next to them, then stack all the PCs and DSs and PSPs in yet another stack and then just walk away, we could probably all get a lot more reading done.Xbox 360 sales reach 28M, Xbox Live garners 17M users originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 11:55:00 EST.
Australian Silent Hill: Homecoming Ban Lifted [Game On]

One of many titles banned in Australia last year due to a rather wonky classification system, Konami's Silent Hill: Homecoming has now been granted a rating of MA15+, clearing it for launch. As we've touched on in previous stories, Australia's game classification stops at MA15+, lacking the R18+ rating that particularly violent films are afforded. Seeing as Silent Hill: Homecoming isn't exactly children's fare it was originally deemed too violent and graphic for an MA15+, which in effect banned the game from release in the country. Now an update to the Classification Board's website dated yesterday indicates the title has now been given the MA15+ rating, and therefor may see the shining light of those lovely Australian store shelves. Now word on what if any cuts were made to the game to garner the new rating. I just think it's silly that a country filled with bears that drop out of trees to eat unsuspecting foreigners would be concerned with video game violence at all. Silent Hill: Homecoming unbanned in Australia [GameStop]

It's a torturous route, extending the road as they go, wending around the mountains and plunging through Svartalfar territory and then out the far end to farther extend the road. I've got an open border agreement with these dark evles, so I expect an uneventful trip, followed by safe passage of the mithril supply to my cities once the road is complete. But to guard against wandering barbarians once the workers reach the far side of the mountains and Svartalfar territory, they're accompanied by a pair of mimics (Balseraph units who can steal promotions from enemy units, and thus end up with an interesting...

XBLA receiving Hasbro game channel; EA's Scrabble coming to handhelds, consoles

: Nintendo DS, Sony PSP, Microsoft Xbox 360
Electronic Arts announced today that Scrabble will make its way to the DS and PSP in March, and to Xbox Live Arcade at a later date. Beginning in spring, XBLA will not only receive the perennial wordsmith board game, but also Boggle, Battleship, Yahtzee, Connect Four, Sorry! and Sorry!Sliders. In a very interesting development, XBLA will also receive a branded "Hasbro Family Game Night" channel. Chip Lange, general manager of EA Hasbro, says it'll allow players to easily find family-friendly digital board games. We only wish that Microsoft would extend such a courtesy to the high-quality European board games that are also available on the service.XBLA receiving Hasbro game channel; EA's Scrabble coming to handhelds, consoles originally appeared on Joystiq on Tue, 06 Jan 2009 11:23:00 EST.
EVE Online Player Reaches 100 Million Skillpoints

You read that right. An EVE Online player, a Caldari pilot named NTRabbit, has amassed over 100 million skill points. While most of MMO fans have no concept of how long it might take to achieve those crucial nine digits (and most of us probably never will), it can honestly be tallied as a remarkable feat of dedication. His posts on the official forums are nostalgic, but they also carry with them a dash of self-importance that any player that achieves that sort of skill level should carry with them. Here's a snippet:

The Guiding Hand Social Club provided me with opportunities for destruction on a grand scale. I participated in many... ventures. Theft, murder, more simple mercenary work, but always with a grand objective and an even grander tale at the end. Sometimes it even got to the point where my presence in a system would scare entire gangs, even the erroneously vaunted MC, into docking, just in case I was pulling some more bs.

Eventually Tyrrax Thorrk realised the utility of my skillset in the tournament; since then, I have participated in all, with mixed results. I was in the Curse when the Imperial Apocalypse was destroyed a disappointing result, but quite epic to watch in person.

You can check out his whole dialogue over on the EVE official forums!read more

Gran Turismo: Two Guys Go From Racing Games To Racing Real Cars

Kotaku Write: Last year, Sony and Nissan teamed up to hold a Gran Turismo competition. GT racers would compete for a spot on a real race team. The winners are in, so let's go meet 'em. Lars Schlömer is a German cab driver. Lucas Ordóñez is a uni student from Spain. Both are mad Gran Turismo fanboys, both have mad Gran Turismo skills, both will now be racing in the 24-hour Dubai endurance race on January 8 after they beat out 25,000 other competitors in GT5: Prologue for the top prize. They'll be joined on the team (the Nissan PlayStation Team) by ex-Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert, and really, as far as game competitions go I'm stumped trying to come up with one that's so damn amazing.

Warning: New StarCraft 2 screens

: Mac, PCclick to embiggen (it's your funeral)
We're posting these new StarCraft II screens (we count six) with much reservation. After all, someone out there woke up this morning with no intention to die. But, having seen these new depictions of war-waging micro machines, this someone has triggered an inescapable obsession. Our friend will sit and stare until the eyes bleed, the throat dries and the body wavers. Eventually, this poor soul will keel over and, yes, drop dead. The doctors will call it many things: dehydration, exhaustion, heart failure. But we know the true cause.
First Details on Ubisoft's I Am Alive Unearthed

		I Am Alive 'E3 2008' trailer

Back when we first got word of I Am Alive, a new disaster game from Ubisoft, the popular gossip was that the title would feature Jade Raymond (of Assassin's Creed fame) as producer. Since then, Ubisoft hasn't provided much info aside from the debut trailer above, but we've finally got new details courtesy of the cover story from the latest issue of GamesTM. And as it turns out, Raymond isn't as involved with the title as the rumor mill led us to believe.

In the article, developer Darkworks (best known for last gen's so-so survival horror game Cold Fear) reveals that Jade Raymond isn't working on I Am Alive at all, and the team actually has no idea how that rumor got started. In Raymond's rumored place stands senior producer Alexis Goddard, who seems most enthusiastic about how the project draws on other sources:

"Disaster has been a recurring theme for entertainment since the beginning of time. We're not really reinventing that here. We're putting it together for the first time in a totally new package. Most of what we're doing will remind you of tidbits that you've seen or heard here and there -- Robert Neville in I Am Legend gradually starts to lose his humanity and sanity in the ruins of New York. In The Day After Tomorrow and War of the Worlds you see Western cities torn apart by unrelenting forces."

Later in the article, Goddard also brings up comparisons to Armageddon, Titanic, Cloverfield, Jericho, and Lost. But with such a wide variety of influences from other mediums, what is the actual gameplay like? Goddard describes it as being built "around the concept of social chaos." After a mysterious earthquake destroys Chicago, main character Adam Collins must find his girlfriend and seek out enough survivors to get the attention of a mysteriously quiet government task force.
