BattleForge, Open beta goes live today

Phenomic, an Electronic Arts just announced that the real-time strategy (RTS) game BattleForge will open its beta for all players today. Starting today, all players will be able to enter the genre-changing world of BattleForge and experience the thrill of virtual cards coming to life in epic, online RTS battles before the game goes live on March 24th, 2009.

The open beta players will have access to all 200 BattleForge cards and all maps in the game. Everyone who takes part in the beta will get the bonus, upgraded Firedancer unit that will be available after launch. Players who pre-order BattleForge from participating retailers will receive four, exclusive units, one from each faction to jump start their decks.

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has released a patch for the PC-DVD version of its Silent Hill Homecoming. The download resolves an issue related to the changing of graphic resolutions, and is automatically applied when the game is installed for the first time. For users who have previously installed and registered a copy of Silent Hill Homecoming, the patch will automatically download and update the game when they next run the game while connected to the internet.

Harmonix and MTV Games, a part of Viacom’s MTV Networks along with distribution partner Electronic Arts just announced that its critically acclaimed music videogame Rock Band® 2 will begin shipping in Europe for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system beginning the week of 23rd March. Rock Band 2 will also ship for the Wii™ home video game console from Nintendo beginning week of 20th April.

Rock Band 2 software will retail for £49.99 on the PLAYSTATION 3, £29.99 for the PlayStation 2 and £39.99 for the Wii. Rock Band 2 is also currently available on the Xbox 360® videogame and entertainment system for £49.99.

Nintendo has outlined a list of countries around the globe that remain leaders in denying adequate and effective protection of video game products. In its annual comments to the U.S. Trade Representative under the "Special 301" process, Nintendo has singled out countries where piracy is rampant and has asked the United States to take further steps to combat it.

Nintendo reports that piracy of its most popular products, the Nintendo DS™ and Wii™ systems, has increased during the year. Nintendo attributes this increase to the availability of circumvention devices, such as "game copiers" and "mod chips." These devices skirt the product security embedded in Nintendo's famous products and enable the play of illegal Nintendo software.

Phoenix Marketing International’s Travel and Leisure Division announced that its Video Game Advertising Performance Index (AdPi) Audit™, conducted in January 2009, showed that Nintendo was the only video game publisher whose advertisements in the fourth quarter of 2008 earned above average AdPi scores for effectiveness and impact in all three media categories – print, television, and digital – studied.

The Phoenix AdPi Audit combines brand performance, advertising performance, and copy testing. This latest one measured consumers’ reactions to 30 ads that were in-market from October through December 2008. The ads were from top video game publishers such as Activision, Disney Interactive, Electronic Arts, Microsoft, MTV Games, Nintendo, Sony and Ubisoft.

Fortress Forever, Version 2.3 Released

Altered the version checker to allow us to release future FF updates that don't require new client/server code binaries

Made HW tracer frequency different between client (1 in 2 shots for your ac) and server (1 in 8 shots for another player's ac)

Sony Computer Entertainment just announced that the cumulative worldwide sell-in units of PSP handheld entertainment system (PSP-1000, 2000 and 3000 series) reached a total of 50 million units as of January 2009.

As the first handheld platform from the PlayStation® family, PSP made its debut in December 2004 in Japan, March 2005 in North America, May 2005 in Asian countries and regions, and September 2005 in Europe/PAL territories. Bringing the innovative entertainment world of PlayStation® and PlayStation®2 on the go, PSP introduced the latest advancement in technology for building handheld devices, including a 4.3 inch wide high resolution LCD screen, the largest of its kind for a portable device. EA Announces New Street Date for The Godfather II

Electronic Arts and Paramount Digital Entertainment just announced that The Godfather II videogame will now be available in stores on April 10th in Europe.

“The Godfather II is taking the open-world genre in an entirely new direction by combining the furious combat of acting like a mobster, with the strategic gameplay of thinking like a Don,” says Hunter Smith, Executive Producer for The Godfather II. “As game makers, when we looked at what lies at the heart of the Godfather universe, we discovered a game focused around organized crime. The Corleones and all the other families schemed and fought to gain access and control of different territories, so that they could control the flow of money in those areas. This underlying battle cloaked secrecy is what The Godfather II and mafia life is all about, and we wanted players to be in control as a Don and make those strategic decisions to lead their family’s to success.”

Midway Has Filed for Bankruptcy US operation files for protection from creditors

Midway Games Inc.just announced that the company and its U.S. subsidiaries filed voluntary petitions in U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware for reorganization under Chapter 11 of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. The filing does not include the company's non-U.S. operations, which will continue business as normal.

In its filing with the Bankruptcy Court, the company cited that the November 28, 2008, change in ownership triggered accelerated repurchase obligations relating to two classes of Midway debt, which Midway anticipated it would be unable to satisfy.
